Heavy Duty Breaks (Illuminated megamix, 1984)

Various Artists - Genres - Dance - Heavy Duty Breaks

Here's an album that Illuminated Records put out in 1984 that is comprised of a 15-minute label roster megamix on each side: the songs segue from one to the next without dropping the beat (with continuity provided by a beatbox). Each clip is a teaser for the full-length version. Illluminated had an impressive lineup of "gothic funk" bands; here are the songs included in the two side-long mixes:

Side 1
400 Blows: Pressure
23 Skidoo: F.U.G.I.
Out: Tough Enough
Dormannu: The Dread
Zazou: M'pasi Ya Pamba
400 Blows: Grove Jumping
23 Skidoo: Coup
400 Blows: Declaration of Intent

Side 2
Executive Slacks: Our Lady
Data: Blow
Portion Control: Raise the pulse
Data: Blow
Portion Control: Go-Talk
Power to Dream: Faith Healer
Tara Butler: Up against the wall
Power to Dream: Faith Healer
Sex Gang: Dieche

Get it here or here.

Great site you have here. It's not often you find this stuff available. This is the music I grew up on and it's great to hear it again. A lot of it I have on vinyl, but it has been collecting dust for years. Please keep up the hard work. It's very much appreciated.

Fantod, Thank You a thousand times. This is a record from my adolescence that I treasure to this day, but mine skips like a mad thing!

By the way - is this from your vinyl or did you find it online?

Also - would you mind if posted this? I will of course credit you.

Hello Herbal T -- sorry for the delay in responding, I've been away. To answer your quesion, this is a rip from my own vinyl. I don't mind if you post it too, but I ask that you include a link back to this post as well. Oh wait, I see you already have, well that's cool. Nice blog you've got there!

Best,
Fantod

Thanks for putting this up. I have a copy of this on 12". I found it when back in 1998 or 1999 a charity. I was about 13 or 14 and had just got into techno. This blew my mind and opened my musical horizons to no end. I can’t thank you enough for posting this.

In the age of Americanised global 'rap' hegemony its sometimes difficult to remember back to the early eighties & the degree to which electro/rap/hip-hop was still, to a large degree, an oppositional "outsider" music (Rapper's Delight aside!). So much so that avant-garde "industrial" aesthetes like Illuminated Records in the UK felt the same kind of 'kinship' the no-wave/post-punk NY scene did with its indigenous "black" musical neighbours (of course the 'Buffalo Gal' mischief of the late McLaren upsets this neat US/UK correlation!).

This is a fascinating document of musical history and many thanks for sharing it.

As a side note, I would really like a copy of this in 320 and as I have no record player anymore, if anyone who has a deck and a means to rip and wants a vinyl copy of this which you can pick on Discogs for £4-£6 (near mint!). I am happy to send a fiver to them and all I ask is they do me a decent rip of it!

My offer for anyone who is thinking of buying a vinyl copy of Heavy Duty Breaks is still open!

I have heard different versions of Heavy Duty Breaks and the mystery is finally cleared up; in addition to the album there was a 12 inch single released on Illuminated:

Heavy Duty Breaks - Heavy Duty Breaks
Illuminated Records ILL 5512
Vinyl 12 Inch 1985
1985

A1 Heavy Duty Breaks (Radio Version)
B1 Heavy Duty Breaks (Bonus Beats)

There is a near mint copy of the 12 going for £2!!! would be interested in paying for that as well in return for a good vinyl rip for anyone out there still collecting vinyl!
